affic Prediction and Discovery of News via News Crowds</em> at the First
Workshop on Social News on the Web (SNOW).&nbsp\; SNOW will be held in
conjunction with the 22nd International World Wide Web Conference (WWW 2
 013) in Rio de Janiero.<br />\n<br />\n<b>Abstract: </b><br />\nWe consi
der the users who share a specific online news article on a social media
platform. This group is the &quot\;news crowd&quot\; of the article\, a
n analogy with the crowd of passers-by that gathers around any incident
on a busy street. First\, we study both the volume and the diversity of
the social media conversations of this crowd around the news item\, to p
roduce improved predictions of its impact. Second\, we follow the crowd
during several days in order to find out other news which may be related
to the original one.<br />\n<br />\nThis talk is based on joint work wi

style="color: black\;">In recent years\, mobile devices have become powe
rful in terms of computing power\, memory\, screen size\, and screen qua

However\, providing high-quality multimedia services to numerous mobile
users faces many challenges\, including scarce and variable wireless ba

TZID:Asia/Qatar

LOCATION:10th floor\, Tornado Tower\, West Bay\, Doha
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Najim Dehak of MIT presents the state of the art approach
es for language recognition and dialect identification.
COMMENT:<div>Language or dialect recognition tasks consist of determining
the language or dialect identity spoken in a speech segment. Usually\,
language recognition systems are a fusion of multiple sub-systems operat
ing on several speech features such as acoustic\, phonotactic\, and pros
odic information. Dr. Dehak will also discuss the effects of the interse
ssion variability and the way that we can compensate for this effect on
both features and models levels. In this presentation\, he will show the
results obtained by the acoustic-cepstral and phonotactic systems on th
e latest NIST Language Recognition Evaluation (LRE) dataset. The NIST 20
11 LRE task focused on closed-set pairwise performance so as to emphasiz
 e a system&rsquo\;s ability to distinguish confusable language pairs\, w
hich can be a consequence of language dialects.</div>\n<br />\n<br />\n<
b>Bio:</b> &nbsp\;Najim Dehak received his Engineering degree in Artific
ial Intelligence in 2003 from Universite des Sciences et de la Technolog
ie d'Oran\, Algeria\, and his MS degree in Pattern Recognition and Artif
icial Intelligence Applications in 2004 from the Universite de Pierre et
Marie Curie\, Paris\, France. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Ecole d
e Technologie Superieure (ETS)\, Montreal in 2009. During his Ph.D. stud
ies he was also with Centre de recherche informatique de Montreal (CRIM)
\, Canada. In the summer of 2008\, he participated in the Johns Hopkins
University\, Center for Language and Speech Processing\, Summer Workshop
. During that time\, he proposed a new system forspeaker verification th

DESCRIPTION:For over four decades\, our research community has taken rema

 know what it doesn't.
COMMENT:In Dr. Zue's opinion\, we are not likely to succeed until we can
build interfaces that behave more like living organisms that can observe

 ure by Kenneth Heafield PhD
COMMENT:Computational costs are a constant concern in machine translation
. In recent community evaluations\, many participants reported that time
or memory limitations prevented them from making full use of available
data or experimenting with new ideas. Part of the reason is that statist
ical machine translation systems define a large space of possible transl
ations. Searching this space is expensive\, so constraints and approxima
tions are typically used. This talk will explain the search problem and
present a new algorithm that makes translation 1.24 to 3.16 times as fas
 t.<br />\n<br />\nFor more information please click <a href="http://www.

TZID:Asia/Qatar
UID:20130522T141955Z-uidGen@ganymede.local
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sihem Amer-Yahia\, a principal scientist at Qatar Computi
ng Research Institute (QCRI)\, leads a panel discussion at the Fifth Int
ernational AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media on the topic of n
 ews generation and consumption.
COMMENT:<p>Abstract: The proliferation of social media is changing the wa
ys news are produced and consumed. Recent events in the Arabic Spring sh
owed the power of user-generated content such as amateur videos on YouTu
be\, and Twitter posts\, in instigating change. The question we ask in t
his panel is how technologies can be used to channel people&rsquo\;s ene
rgy and enable the continuous generation of relevant\, timely and truste
d content. We span a wide range of questions covering reliable connectio
n\, social spam and centralized/decentralized news curation. On the cons
umption side\, we contrast news dissemination from popular trusted sourc
es and viral propagation from friends. We also explore event extraction
and adapting existing techniques such as opinion mining to process large
amounts of news in a way appealing to users. Those are some of the ques
tions that will be raised by our panelits who have a wide range of exper
tise in using or developing social media technologies to enable news del
 ivery today.</p>\n<p><a target="_blank" href="http://videolectures.net/i

COMMENT:<p>The rapid expansion of web presence into many new kinds of soc
ial networks has by far outpaced our ability to manage the community\, e
conomic\, demographic and moral forces that shape user experiences. Onli
ne ticket queues\, online retail malls Facebook\, web-based town hall di
scussions\, are just a few examples of places that users have come to re
gard as neighborhoods: they are virtual neighborhoods.</p>\n<p>They begi
n as attractive destinations and fascinate both visitors and inhabitants
. But like many real neighborhoods\, virtual neighborhoods all too often
  turn into frightening\, crime-ridden\, infested eyesores.<br />\nReal c
ommerce is replaced by questionable transactions and billions of dollars
of value is destroyed in the process. In blighted inner city neighborho
ods you can find a familiar array of bad actors: loan sharks\, vagrants\
, drug dealers\, vandals and scam artists.</p>\n<p>Dr. De Millo explored
how easily bad actors can create the virtual version of urban blight an
d how ineffective existing approaches to identity\, trust and security w

LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:The rapid expansion of web presence into many new kinds of so
cial networks has by far outpaced our ability to manage the community\,
economic\, demographic and moral forces that shape user experiences.
COMMENT:<p>Online ticket queues\, online retail malls Facebook\, web-base
d town hall discussions\, are just a few examples of places that users h
ave come to regard as neighborhoods: they are virtual neighborhoods.</p>
\n<p>They begin as attractive destinations and fascinate both visitors a
nd inhabitants. But like many real neighborhoods\, virtual neighborhoods
all too often turn into frightening\, crime-ridden\, infested eyesores.
</p>\n<p>Real commerce is replaced by questionable transactions and bill
ions of dollars of value is destroyed in the process. In blighted inner
city neighborhoods you can find a familiar array of bad actors: loan sha
rks\, vagrants\, drug dealers\, vandals and scam artists. Dr. De Millo e
xplored how easily bad actors can create the virtual version of urban bl
ight and how ineffective existing approaches to identity\, trust and sec
urity will be in battling it.</p>

LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:Software-Defined Networking aims to provide a well-defined pr
ogramming and automation interface to network devices.
COMMENT:<p>In moving network control and functionality to software runnin
g on standard server platforms\, SDNs depart from the traditional\, vert
ically integrated model of network hardware and software. The Research T
eam view SDNs as a new opportunity for supporting more seamless integrat
ion of networks with IT processes\, and for providing higher-value netwo
rk services.</p>\n<p>In this talk\, after describing the SDN model and o
ur approach for building SDNs\, Anees will focus on the problem of provi
ding networking services for cloud computing platforms. As more enterpri
ses look to leverage the cost and flexibility advantages of cloud comput
ing\, the lack of rich networking support remains a challenge. They will
discuss the requirements of enterprise line-of-business applications fo
r additional network functions in the cloud\, and describe our research
efforts to develop networking services for multi-tenant enterprise cloud
 s using software-defined networking techniques.</p>\n<p><a target="_blan
